Types of beds available
There are many options open to you, below is a guide and description to the various types of sleep systems that are available.
Divan Beds
The divan bed is extremely popular; this consists of a box base which is available with storage options in all the below types. The base is upholstered in the same fabric as the mattress to make a matching divan set.
Platform Top - The top of the base can be a platform top base, this will give a firmer feel to the overall feel of the bed.
Sprung Base - Another option is to have a sprung base; this has a layer of springs on the top of the base giving a softer feel. This type of base is often considered to be the most luxurious type of divan bed. This can also give the mattress a longer life span due to the base acting in a shock absorber manner helping the durability of the mattress.
Firm Edge – The firm edge base is made from thicker and stronger springs which are inserted within a solid wooden frame.
Drawer options on Divans - We can offer you various drawer systems such as end drawers, side drawers and ottoman style. Please refer to each model for storage availability.
Bedsteads
Under the category of bedsteads, we can offer you an extremely comprehensive range with exciting designs. Bedsteads can be made from various materials such as wood, metal and even leather. Bedsteads can be constructed in various ways but will normally have a slatted base made from pine or a sprung beech slat; this can differ from frame to frame. Via our various manufacturers we are able to recreate nostalgic designs. All frames come in a flat pack format which is extremely easy to construct in the bedroom. Please visit our home page and look through our extensive range by simply clicking on the links. Generally when choosing a bedstead you will then choose a mattress separately, again we have a wide range of mattresses available and in stock.
Types of Mattresses
Open Coil
The most widely used option, also known as the Bonnell spring. Springs are arranged in rows and connected to one another, top and bottom, by a spiral helical wire with an outer rod strengthening the perimeter. There are 325 springs in a 5ft/150cm size. They measure 6" from top to bottom. This does differ depending on Manufacturer.
Continuous Coil
Made from a single length of wire shaped into a series of loose S-shaped ringlets, making the mattress stronger, more stable and durable. A higher quality construction method than Open Coil mattresses which are used in basic (starter) models.
Pocket Sprung
Each spring is housed in its own individual fabric pocket. This enables the springs to work independently of one another, offering unique support to the body shape and preventing pressure points. A luxurious sleeping experience with the highest level of support.
Memory Foam
This relatively new type of material has a unique feel and slowly responds to your body temperature and weight. It slowly recovers its original shape when the heat and pressure is removed. A unique combination of support and comfort, with good pressure relieving properties.
Hi Tech Latex
A premium quality material derived from the sap of the rubber tree. It has a distinctive resilient feel, is very durable and has anti-microbial properties that offer benefits to many allergy sufferers. It has natural elasticity and quickly recovers its shape, allowing for great support and comfort
Orthopaedic Mattress
An Orthopaedic mattress is a bit of a misnomer really, it is simply a term used by bed manufacturers to indicate that the mattress is firm. Typically an Orthopaedic mattress is constructed using a firm (12.5 gauge) spring unit; the word Orthopaedic doesn’t actually mean it is good for backache. It is important to choose the right bed for your own personal needs, some so called Orthopaedic beds are in fact quite luxurious but still have a firm support spring, where as some are very firm indeed which could be too firm for your needs!
Mattress Coverings
There are various coverings that can be used in the manufacturing of mattresses.
Stichbond - The starting range of products are made from a stichbond covering, this is a perfectly good material, this will not be as durable as some of the more luxurious coverings but is extremely good value.
Damask – For many consumers, damask is closely associated with luxury. The weave of damask is very dense, resulting in a substantial cloth. The designs are often multicoloured, causing them to stand out clearly against the satin background of the fabric. Damask continues to be made from silk, although materials like cotton, linen, wool, and synthetic fibres are also used in the manufacturing of damask. Synthetic damask tends to be much more durable than damask made from organic materials, although it does not have the same feel.
Micro Quilted – This type of covering is basically a panel of fabric which is stitched in a pattern all over the surface, giving a secure and smooth feel to the mattress.
